To the Boss I Call Dad: Lessons I’ll Carry Forward
The Boss I Call Dad
This Father’s Day feels a little different, and a lot more meaningful, now that I get to work alongside my dad. He’s always been my hero, but now he’s also my boss, and seeing him in this new light has only made me respect him even more.
Growing up, I didn’t fully grasp what he did at work. I just knew he worked so hard. Now that I’m working for him, I see the kind of leader he is, dedicated, thoughtful, and quietly powerful. He’s not just a great dad; he’s a great boss, and an even better leader.
My Dad: Superhero, Mentor, CEO
The Things I Never Understood, until I Worked With Him
Hard Work Isn’t Always Loud
As a kid, his long hours were a mystery. Why was his office door shut? Why did Monday mornings feel so intense? (He just loved when I tried to chit-chat then.) Now I understand there’s a quiet kind of hustle that goes into leadership, and I see it every day in how he shows up.
Tough Decisions Don’t Come With Instructions
I’ve watched him navigate challenging calls with calm and confidence. Like when he transitioned the call center online, something that must’ve been terrifying at the time. But he embraced the change without complaint. He didn’t just adapt; he led the way.
Leadership Means Showing Up
My dad leads with heart. He cares deeply about his team, their well-being, and their families. If someone’s kid is sick, he follows up. If someone’s struggling, he checks in, personally. He’s shown me that leadership isn’t about power; it’s about people.
Lessons I’ll Carry Forward
Respect is Built Through Consistency
My dad has always led by example, showing up, delivering results, and treating others with respect. His consistency over the years has earned him trust and admiration from clients, coworkers, and peers alike. He has grown in the industry, starting out as the fun guy in sales, now has built his legacy and Harmon is a respected name he has built in the industry.
Success is Meant to Be Shared
He celebrates his team’s wins, big and small. Whether it’s attending an awards event or helping a teammate through a crunch, he’s there. His leadership lifts others up. For example, his EVP won a Greenbook award, and it was my mom’s birthday and they both hopped on a plane to celebrate our Stephanie! He also took my mom to a nice dinner because he is not a monster or anything.
Family and Business Can Go Hand-in-Hand
We still have the occasional “office talk” at the dinner table. What once was homework help is now project management training. We’ve come a long way from long division, and somehow, he’s still reminding me not to eat yellow snow. (We live in California.)
A Father’s Day Thank You
Thank you, Dad, for trusting me to join the team, for being patient while I learn, and for showing me what real leadership looks like. You’ve always led by example, and I’m so lucky I get to learn from you every day.
Looking Ahead
I’ll carry the lessons you’ve taught me, both at home and at work, into everything I do. You're not just the boss I call Dad. You're the leader I aspire to be. I know the traveling and long work trips were guilt inducing for you, but all I saw from my eyes was a loving Dad who would do anything for his family. Now that I am on your team, I will try my best to follow your examples, work my butt off, and be a kind human. That legacy you left me is so important to me.
Happy Father’s Day Dad, I love you.
